Status (checked 19 October 2026): AS9100 Revision D (20 September 2016) remains the current published edition (IAQG Standards Register, February 2026). IAQG is developing its successor (IA9100). Answers below are Paradygm’s own guidance — not official IAQG interpretations.
What’s included / key points
- Exclusions (4.3): usually you may exclude design if you do not design the product you deliver — justify and ensure conforming product is still delivered.
- Documented information (4.4.2): a document called a “quality manual” is not required, but you must describe the QMS, interested parties, scope, and processes.
- Process measures (4.4 / 9.1): set meaningful indicators per process, assign owners, review in management review.
- Related topics: risk, configuration management, product safety, counterfeit parts, suppliers, FAI (see /as9102), and FOD (see /fod-presentation).
AS9100D at a glance
AS9100D contains all of ISO 9001:2015 plus aviation, space and defence requirements, so you certify to AS9100D directly; ISO 9001 is not a prerequisite. AS9110 applies to maintenance, repair and overhaul organizations, and AS9120 to distributors and stockists (see the AS9120 FAQ).
Requirements that often need attention
- Operational risk management (8.1.1): identify, assess and control risks to delivering product, including mitigation and acceptance of risk.
- Configuration management (8.1.2): control product identity and changes across the product life cycle.
- Product safety (8.1.3): plan and manage the processes that assure product safety throughout the product life.
- Prevention of counterfeit parts (8.1.4): training, sourcing from original or authorized manufacturers, verification and reporting. See counterfeit parts in aerospace.
- External providers (8.4): keep a register of external providers with approval status and scope, monitor their performance and flow down your requirements. See supplier audits.
- Production process verification (8.5.1.3): verify the production process with a first article inspection, usually to AS9102.
- FOD (8.5.1): prevent, detect and remove foreign objects. See the FOD presentation.
- Customer satisfaction (9.1.2): monitoring includes product conformity and on-time delivery performance.
- Awareness (7.3): people understand their contribution to product conformity and product safety, and the importance of ethical behaviour.
