What ISO 9001 is

ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management systems. It sets out how an organization plans its processes, meets customer and legal requirements, controls what it delivers and keeps improving. It is also the base that sector standards such as AS9100 build on.

ISO 9001 follows ISO’s Harmonized Structure, with requirements in Clauses 4 to 10: context of the organization, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement. ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 use the same structure, so one integrated management system can cover quality, environment and health and safety.

ISO 9001:2026 and the transition

ISO 9001:2026 was published on September 16, 2026. Under ANAB and Global Accreditation Cooperation rules, ISO 9001:2015 certificates end on September 30, 2029, and the Standards Council of Canada treats the 2015 version as obsolete from September 15, 2029. From March 31, 2028, new certificates are issued only to ISO 9001:2026. Transition audits can be combined with a surveillance or recertification audit.

How an ISO 9001 project works

  1. Gap assessment. We compare your current processes with ISO 9001 and show what already conforms, what needs updating and what is missing, including risks and opportunities for improvement.
  2. Action plan. Tasks, assignments and a schedule agreed with your team.
  3. Documentation and implementation. We help you prepare the documented information the standard requires and put the processes into daily use.
  4. Internal audit and management review. Confirm the system works before the certification body visits. Our internal auditor training includes a completion certificate.
  5. Certification audit. Your accredited certification body audits the system and issues the certificate.

ISO 9001 for R2 recyclers

For electronics recyclers working toward R2v3, we recommend adding ISO 9001 only when required, for example for test and repair (Appendix C) or brokering (Appendix F).
