DOT Battery Handling

Safe collection and shipping of batteries and battery-containing devices (BCDs).

A training module on Universal Waste management and U.S. DOT rules for batteries in transport.

Safe collection and shipping of batteries and BCDs

This training covers the safe collection and shipping of batteries and battery-containing devices (BCDs), including lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries. It introduces how Universal Waste rules streamline on-site management for recycling, and how U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) hazardous materials rules from PHMSA govern safe transport in commerce — packaging that prevents sparks or dangerous heat, UN identification numbers, terminal protection, the lithium battery mark, and extra controls for damaged, defective, or recalled (DDR) batteries.

Use the video with teams who handle, pack, or offer batteries and BCDs for shipment. Confirm your site’s packaging, marks, labels, and carrier instructions in your own procedures. This resource is educational awareness training and is not a substitute for facility-specific procedures or required regulatory certifications.
